Notary Services for CIT/MTU Students Going Abroad

Notary public services for MTU (formerly CIT) students in Cork. Document authentication for study abroad, work visas, and international career opportunities.

Munster Technological University (MTU), formerly Cork Institute of Technology (CIT), is one of the largest higher education institutions in Ireland, with campuses at Bishopstown and the Crawford College of Art & Design in the city centre. With a strong focus on applied learning and industry partnerships, MTU graduates are in high demand both in Ireland and internationally.

For MTU students and graduates planning to study, work, or travel abroad, notarised documents are frequently required. Hugh Phelan, Solicitor and Notary Public at East Douglas Street, Douglas, provides a convenient and professional notarial service for the entire MTU community.

When MTU Students Need Notary Services

MTU students and recent graduates commonly need notarised documents in the following situations:

  • International work placements: MTU’s strong industry links mean many students undertake work placements abroad, particularly in engineering, IT, business, and hospitality. Employers and immigration authorities in the host country often require notarised copies of qualifications and transcripts.
  • Erasmus+ and exchange programmes: MTU participates in Erasmus+ and has bilateral exchange agreements with universities worldwide. Host institutions typically require notarised academic documents.
  • Postgraduate study abroad: MTU graduates applying for postgraduate programmes at international universities need notarised and often apostilled copies of their degrees, transcripts, and other supporting documents.
  • Professional registration: Graduates in nursing, engineering, computing, and other regulated professions who wish to practise abroad need notarised qualifications for registration with foreign professional bodies.
  • Working holiday and work visas: Popular destinations like Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the UAE require various notarised documents as part of the visa application process.
  • J-1 visa for the US: Many MTU students participate in J-1 summer work programmes in the United States. While the J-1 programme itself has its own application process, some students need notarised financial support documents or other declarations.

Common Documents for MTU Students

The documents we most frequently notarise for MTU students include:

  • Certified true copies of degree parchments and diplomas
  • Academic transcripts
  • Letters of recommendation
  • Employment verification letters from placement employers
  • Birth certificates and passport copies
  • Affidavits of financial support
  • Police clearance documents (Garda vetting)
  • Powers of attorney for managing affairs while abroad

  • Parking: Free parking is available at our Douglas office, making it easy for students who drive.

The Apostille Process Explained

Many countries require an apostille in addition to notarisation. An apostille is a certificate issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs that authenticates the notary’s seal and signature for international use under the Hague Convention. Hugh Phelan’s office can advise on whether an apostille is required for your destination country and prepare your documents accordingly.

For countries that are not members of the Hague Convention (such as some Middle Eastern and Asian countries), a more complex consular legalisation process may be required. We can guide you through this process as well.

Planning Ahead

If you know you’ll be going abroad, we recommend getting your documents notarised well in advance of your departure date. While we offer same-day appointments where possible, the apostille and legalisation process can take additional time — typically one to two weeks for standard apostille processing through the Department of Foreign Affairs.
